PIONEER EDGE NEWS SERVICE/ New Tehri Chief minister Pushkar Singh Dhami said that Tehri Lake is set to become a major hub for adventure sports and tourism, not just in India but globally. He said this during the inauguration of ‘Himalayan 0.2 The Tehri Lake Festival on Friday. The festival aims to promote tourism, adventure sports, environmental awareness and local culture. At the event, CM also laid the foundation stone for the Koti- Dobara tourism road. This project, funded by the Asian Development Bank, has a budget of Rs 318 crore and will span approximately 15 kilometres. Additionally, he also announced the construction of the Koti Colony-New Tehri Ropeway.  CM emphasised that the sacred land of Uttarakhand serves as a beautiful confluence of spirituality and folk culture. He described the festival, held on the banks of Tehri Lake, as a significant initiative to integrate tourism, sports and local culture. Dhami said that Tehri Lake, nestled in the Himalayas, exemplifies natural beauty and is rapidly becoming a prominent location for adventure sports. He said that various national and international water sports competitions hosted here offer athletes a chance to showcase their skills while helping Uttarakhand carve out a new identity on the global sports map. “Our goal is to develop Tehri into a key centre for water sports and adventure activities,” he stated. CM said that to achieve this, the government is promoting kayaking, canoeing, jet-skiing, para-sailing, scuba diving and other adventure sports on Tehri Lake. Modern training facilities are being established to help young athletes bring recognition to Uttarakhand in national and international competitions. He added that the burgeoning sports and tourism ecosystem around Tehri Lake is generating new self-employment opportunities and economic empowerment for local residents. CM further highlighted the State government’s initiatives to enhance tourism and adventure sports. Additionally, he revealed that over 400 youths are currently receiving paragliding training in Tehri.  He provided an overview of the extensive development projects underway in the Tehri region, worth over Rs 1,300 crore. These projects include the development of Tehri Lake, construction of a ring road, and the transformation of Timad village into a tourist destination, among others. He also said the establishment of 10 compactor centres and 4,267 garbage collection centres for managing plastic waste across all blocks in the district. Notably, the said festival, which runs until March 9, will feature a variety of activities, including adventure sports, tourism events, and programs celebrating folk culture. Cabinet minister Subodh Uniyal and other officials concerned were present at the occasion.
