US expert briefs Gov on changing behaviour of bears

Dehradun, 2 Mar: Dr SM Wilson, Chief Executive Officer of the Blackfoot Challenge (State of Montana, USA), met Governor Lt General Gurmit Singh (Retd) at the Lok Bhavan here on Monday.
On this occasion, Dr Wilson shared insights from his 20 years of research and experience on the issue of human–bear conflict. He stated that his research indicates bears are often attracted to populated areas due to the remains of dead livestock. In such cases, the scientific and safe disposal of animal carcasses is extremely important to reduce the attraction of bears toward human settlements. He also noted that climate change is influencing bear behaviour. A reduction in the duration of hibernation has led to bears remaining active for longer periods and moving closer to human habitations in search of food.
He suggested that, to reduce human–bear conflict, detailed studies should be conducted on bear diet, habitat behaviour, and activity patterns. Community participation, co-creation of scientific data, preventive measures, proper carcass management, public awareness, and effective management strategies can help address the issue.
The Governor appreciated Dr Wilson’s experiences and stated that maintaining human–wildlife balance is extremely important in a mountainous state like Uttarakhand. He emphasised that harmony between humans and wildlife can be achieved through a scientific approach, community participation, and coordinated efforts. He also requested Dr Wilson to share his suggestions with the Forest Minister and the Secretary.
