Congress wrests prestigious Dehradun district Panchayat president seat from BJP PIONEER EDGE NEWS SERVICE | Dehradun The Bharatiya Janata Party candidates secured victory in five district Panchayat president seats while Congress emerged victorious only on one post of the Dehradun district Panchayat president in the second stage of the elections of the three tier Panchayat bodies of the State held on Thursday. On complaints of irregularities and kidnapping of the candidates, the Uttarakhand High Court  withheld the election process for the post of president of district Panchayat in Nainital.  The candidates supported by ruling BJP won in Chamoli, Pauri, Almora, Rudraprayag and Bageshwar. Congress supported candidate Sukhwinder Kaur defeated Madhu Chauhan of BJP in the election to the prestigious post of Dehradun district Panchayat president. She secured 17 votes while Chauhan had to contend with only 13 votes. On the post of vice president of Dehradun district Panchayat, Abhishek Singh the son of senior Congress leader Pritam Singh emerged victorious.  In Pauri, Rachna Butola of BJP defeated Dipika Istwal of Congress in the election for the post of district Panchayat president. Here Arti Negi was elected vice president.  In tge election for the Bageshwar district Panchayat president’s seat, Shobha Arya of BJP defeated Saroj Arya of Congress while in Chamoli BJP candidate Daulat Singh Bisht defeated Rama Devi of Congress. In Rudraprayag, Poonam Kaithait of BJP defeated Priti Pushpwan of Congress by a thin margin of one vote. Here the returning officer cancelled the vote of one district Panchayat member.  In Nainital, the Congress alleged that five of its supporters were kidnapped, following which the leader of opposition (LoP) Yashpal Arya filed a plea in High Court. Accepting his plea the HC withheld the election process and ordered the administration to hold election again on August 18. In Nainital, the BJP had fielded Deepa Darmwal against Pushpa Negi of Congress.
