PIONEER EDGE NEWS SERVICE/ Dehradun Chief minister Pushkar Singh Dhami has said that maintaining the soil fertility is of paramount importance and the farms should be kept free from chemicals. He was addressing ‘Khet Bachao Abhiyan’ at Hawalbagh in Almora on Saturday.  The CM said that the campaign should be made a mass movement. The programme was organised with an objective of securing the future of agriculture and farmers amid the challenges of climate change. Speaking on the occasion, the CM called upon the farmers to take a pledge to protect their agricultural land, soil and natural resources.  Dhami said that farmers are not only food providers but also the strength and courage of the country. In our culture, soil is not just a piece of land but is revered like a mother.  He said that it is everyone’s responsibility to leave a healthy and safe agricultural system for future generations. The CM informed that a provision of Rs 200 crore has been made in the budget to increase the income of farmers.  In the programme, the CM asked farmers to conduct regular soil testing, use water judiciously and cultivate crops in accordance with the advice of agricultural experts and scientific research. He said that crops should be selected to suit changing weather and climate conditions. Dhami said that environmental protection and economic prosperity are complementary to each other and it is essential to maintain a balance between ecology and economy.  He said that the State government is continuously working for the prosperity of farmers. Numerous schemes are being implemented for the horticulture sector to increase farmers’ income. “Many schemes have been implemented to promote playhouses, fruit production, cold storage, mega food parks and the production of aromatic crops. Currently, the production of aromatic crops is being encouraged on 23,000 hectares in the State,’’ he said.  Addressing the programme, the Agriculture minister Ganesh Joshi said that farmers should work towards increasing production by adopting natural and organic farming. He said that under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and CM Dhami, effective policies have been made to promote crops like dragon fruit, kiwi and millet in the interest of farmers. “Despite the decrease in cultivated area, there has been an unprecedented increase in agricultural products,’’ he said.  A large number of farmers, women’s groups, public representatives, and officials participated in the programme and pledged to promote agricultural conservation, soil enrichment and climate-friendly farming. MLAs Pramod Nainwal, Mohan Singh Mehra, Mahesh Jeena, officers of district administration and others attended the programme.
