Dehradun, 10 Jul: A training programme on “Conservation and Sustainable Management of Forest Ecosystems” was organised by the Forest Research Institute (FRI) here, today, in the FRI Board Room for officers and personnel of the Indian Army. Lt Col Manoj Gurung and Maj PC Mishra and other 45 military personnel attended the training programme.
On this occasion, Director, FRI, Richa Mishra, in her inaugural address, emphasised the importance of integrating environmental conservation with defence activities. She highlighted that while the Indian Army plays a vital role in safeguarding national security, forests are equally crucial for ecological stability by regulating climate, conserving biodiversity, and supporting livelihoods. The programme aimed to promote a balanced approach between defence preparedness and environmental sustainability.
The training focused on sensitising Army personnel to ecological concerns, particularly in areas where military activities overlap with sensitive ecosystems. Key topics included identification of flora and fauna in firing ranges, wildlife breeding concerns, pollution prevention, and restoration of degraded landscapes.
N Bala, former Senior Scientist, FRI, emphasised on the restoration of degraded forest lands. Dr Lalit Kumar Sharma, Scientist, Zoological Survey of India, Kolkata, explained the major faunal behaviour, breeding concerns, and necessary precautions in military firing ranges.
Other experts delivered lectures on biodiversity conservation, ecosystem services, eco-restoration, and pollution management, with special emphasis on mitigating the impact of firing activities on soil, water, and air.
The programme was attended by Dr DP Khali, Group Coordinator (Research), Dr VP Panwar, Project coordinator, Dr Tara Chand, Publicity and Liaisoning Officer, FRI, all Heads of Divisions, scientists, and technical professionals of the Forest Ecology and Climate Change Division, FRI.
