PIONEER EDGE NEWS SERVICE/ Haldwani Uttarakhand’s sports received a major gift on the National Sports Day on Saturday as the chief minister Pushkar Singh Dhami laid the foundation stone for the first phase of the Rs 43.50 crore Uttarakhand State Sports University project at the international stadium in Gaulapar. Along with this, the university’s first academic session was also inaugurated. The CM said that the foundation stone laying of the Sports University and the launch of its first academic session would give new wings to the dreams of the state’s young athletes. Notably, National Sports Day is observed to mark the birth anniversary of the hockey wizard Major Dhyan Chand. “Until now, athletes from the state had to travel to other states for sports education and specialised training. Now they will receive world-class sports education, modern training and ample opportunities for advancement in their own land,” he said, adding that Uttarakhand is poised to establish itself as a land of sports too in the coming years.He further stated that the government is continuously working to provide financial assistance and better facilities to athletes. “Under the Mukhyamantri Udeeyman Khiladi Unnayan Chhatravriti Yojana, athletes aged between eight and14 years are provided monthly scholarships. Players aged between 14 and 23 years are also provided with monthly sports scholarships and financial assistance for purchasing sports equipment. Insurance and financial assistance have been provided for athletes in case of sports injuries and emergencies,” Dhami said.He also mentioned out-of-turn government employment for the medal-winners at the national and international levels being implemented here. “So far, 29 athletes have been appointed to government service, while the process of employing 243 athletes who won medals at the 38th National Games in various categories is underway,” he added. The state’s first girls’ sports college in Lohaghat, the draft of the Uttarakhand Sports Policy-2026 and “One District, One Sport” scheme also found mention in the CM’s address. “Work is also underway to establish 23 new high-tech sports academies in various regions of the state,” he said, adding that the government is working on a special roadmap to win maximum medals in the National Games 2027 and to ensure a strong presence of Uttarakhand players in the Olympics 2036.
