Haldwani, 28 May: Veteran Congress leader and former Chief Minister Harish Rawat has levelled serious allegations against the District Development Authority, claiming it has become a tool for extortion and is harassing the public. Addressing the media in Haldwani during his visit, Rawat said the authority’s officials had turned into ‘extortion masters’ and the system had become a festering wound for the state. He demanded that the government must protect the citizens from the authority’s excesses.
Rawat also addressed questions on Rahul Gandhi’s proposed visit to Uttarakhand on 4 June and claimed that Congress workers are eagerly awaiting the rally in Almora. Rawat also claimed that Rahul Gandhi’s rally in Almora would be historic. He added that thousands of people would gather to hear Gandhi, and asserted that the preparations are underway to make the event in Almora as well as the ex-servicemen’s conference in Pauri memorable.
On this occasion, Rawat also mocked the BJP for what he termed as internal disputes within the ruling party. He stated that the party which often accused Congress of differences is now itself facing infighting and factionalism. He said the situation within the BJP have reached a point of “head-on clashes”, exposing the cracks in its organisation.
