Dehradun, 6 Oct: Uttarakhand has set a target of becoming a 100% literate state within the next six months. A comprehensive campaign will be undertaken across the state to achieve this objective. A roadmap has also been prepared to increase the Gross Enrolment Ratio (GER) in higher education to 50% by 2035. The state government will not close any school, even if there is only one child studying in it.
School Education Minister Dr. Dhan Singh Rawat, stated this today at a programme organized by Samagra Shiksha at the Chief Minister’s residence to mark Uttarakhand attaining the status of a fully literate state.
He said that Uttarakhand has achieved the distinction of becoming a fully literate state under the National Education Policy (NEP)-2020 and the ULLAS – Nav Bharat Saaksharta Karyakram. The state’s literacy rate has reached 98.7%, which is significantly higher than the 95% adult literacy benchmark prescribed by the Government of India. He said the target has been set to make the state 100% literate within the next six months, and all necessary preparations have been completed at the departmental level.
Dr. Rawat said around 25,000 volunteers played an important role in making the campaign successful. These included teachers, students, neo-literates and volunteers. He lauded the contribution of everyone associated with the campaign and said that the state had achieved this milestone through their tireless efforts. After Mizoram, Goa, Tripura, Himachal Pradesh and Sikkim, Uttarakhand has become the sixth state in the country to attain the status of a fully literate state.
Education Minister Dr. Dhan Singh Rawat said that under the National Education Policy-2020, the national target is to increase the Gross Enrolment Ratio in higher education to 50% by 2035. Uttarakhand is moving rapidly towards achieving this target within the current year itself.
The Education Minister said that the state government is committed to ensuring access to education for every child. He reiterated that no school will be closed in any village as long as even a single child is enrolled there.
MLA Savita Kapoor, Additional Secretary to the Government of India Archana Sharma Awasthi, Secretary Education Jyoti Yadav, Additional Secretary Namami Bansal and other departmental officials were present on the occasion.
