Dehradun: Continuous rainfall across Uttarakhand has raised concerns over the weather situation, with the Meteorological Department warning of a low-to-moderate risk of flash floods in 12 districts over the next 24 hours. Udham Singh Nagar is the only district excluded from the flash-flood risk advisory. In view of the forecast, the state administration has stepped up precautionary measures and directed officials in vulnerable districts to remain on high alert. Disaster Management Secretary Vinod Kumar Suman has instructed District Magistrates and officials of concerned departments to closely monitor the situation. Agencies have also been asked to intensify surveillance in vulnerable areas and remain prepared for immediate relief and rescue operations should an emergency arise. Flash Flood Risk in 12 Districts According to the Meteorological Department’s flash flood risk bulletin, specific catchment areas and adjoining regions of Almora, Bageshwar, Chamoli, Champawat, Dehradun, Tehri, Haridwar, Nainital, Pithoragarh, Rudraprayag, Uttarkashi and Pauri face the possibility of flash floods. Officials are keeping a close watch on areas that are particularly vulnerable to sudden increases in water levels and rapid runoff. Waterlogging Risk Rises in Low-Lying Areas The Disaster Management Department has noted that persistent rainfall has left the soil heavily saturated across several areas. With the ground’s capacity to absorb additional rainwater reduced, surface runoff could increase, raising the possibility of waterlogging in low-lying areas. Authorities have also warned of risks associated with flash floods, landslides and sudden rises in the water levels of rivers and streams. District administrations and concerned departments have been directed to take all necessary precautionary measures. Exercise Caution Near Small Streams Authorities have cautioned that even small streams in the state’s hilly areas can suddenly turn dangerous due to heavy rainfall. Water levels may rise rapidly, accompanied by strong and fast-moving currents. Residents and visitors have been advised to stay away from bridges, culverts, riverbanks, streams and waterlogged areas, particularly during periods of intense rainfall. Public Advised to Avoid Unnecessary Travel Amid the continuing adverse weather conditions, the administration has appealed to people to avoid unnecessary travel and exercise extra caution while travelling on landslide-prone routes. People have also been advised to check weather and road conditions before beginning their journey and to avoid taking rising river or stream water levels lightly. Authorities have urged residents to remain alert, follow official advisories and move to safer locations if conditions deteriorate. With rainfall continuing, officials are maintaining close surveillance across vulnerable parts of the state to respond quickly to any emergency.
