PIONEER EDGE NEWS SERVICE/Jyotirmath After the death of eight persons and two still missing in the Vishnugad-Pipalkoti hydro electric project tunnel disaster on August 13, Garhwal commissioner Anand Swaroop chaired a review meeting on Monday in which various aspects of the disaster were discussed. Officials informed the commissioner that a total of 22 workers were affected by the disaster out of whom 12 were rescued so far with seven of them being under treatment in Gopeshwar and one in AIIMS Rishikesh. Eight workers have died while two are still missing, for whom the search and rescue operation is being carried round the clock, the officials claimed. Taking cognisance of the rescue operation, Swaroop directed the obvious- that the search and rescue operation for the missing workers be carried out seriously and swiftly. Officials informed him that three machines have been removed from the tunnel while work is underway to remove an excavator and a dumper. Swaroop also talked about labour welfare in the meeting. The Labour official was told to check the PF and related documents of those working in the THDC India Limited project and present a clear and factual report. It is pertinent to mention here that at a time when Uttarakhand is still projecting itself as a source of green energy, especially through hydro power projects, the latest disaster has once again raised some basic questions- which were also raised during –past disasters in hydro power projects. The THDCIL has already announced an ex-gratia of Rs five lakh for the next of kin of those who died and financial assistance of Rs one lakh for those injured in the disaster. Locals, workers involved in the project and others have objected to the amount, stating that it is inadequate. Others involved in the project have also raised questions at the technical aspects and the rescue and relief operation carried out after the disaster.
